Emerging Areas of Research at the Striped Bass Initiative

Chronobiology

We've discovered that striped bass exhibit striking daily circadian rhythms in activity and use of the water column. These rhythms also change dramatically over the seasonal migratory cycle. Our PSAT tags measure activity levels, depth, temperature, and light every 5 seconds. These high-resolution data provide moment-to-moment insights into striped bass biological rhythms.

Our research has found that striped bass exhibit daily rhythms in their use of depth;
surfacing during the day and going deeper at night.

Energetics

Acceleration and temperature data from our PSAT tags help us quantify how much energy fish expend during migration at different location, depths, and temperatures.

These field-based records give unprecedented insights into the energetic cost of predation, movement, and varying environmental conditions.
