Stripe Aberrations

Non-invasive fish identification

Stripe aberrations are natural variations or disruptions in the typical horizontal stripe pattern of striped bass. These can include breaks, bends, irregular widths, or unique markings within the stripes along the side of the fish.

Tracking aberrations across time

Since 2017, the SBI team has systematically photographed individual striped bass during taggings and through underwater video.

Our growing image archive captures multiple years of recaptures, documenting the same fish returning to Eel Pond in Cape Cod, MA.

Leveraging AI

We're collaborating with the GotOne app team to integrate AI-powered identification of stripe aberrations.

Using our extensive photo archive, GotOne’s engineers are training visual recognition models to automate individual identification. This tool is in development, check back for updates!
